The First And Only Whale Heritage Site in Latin America
Posted Sep 29, 2023
Golfo Dulce, Southern Costa Rica.
Situated along Costa Rica's South Pacific coast, Golfo Dulce has just earned the prestigious Whale Heritage Site status, becoming the first in Latin America and one of just eight globally.
This recognition from the Whale Heritage Site program, supported by the WCA and World Animal Protection, honors communities' efforts to protect and celebrate whales and their habitats.
Golfo Dulce is a crucial habitat for bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, false killer whales, humpbackwhales (from July through the end of October) and an array of marine life. It's also an Important Marine Mammal Area and designated a Marine Area of Responsible Fishing, reflecting Costa Rica's commitment to marine sustainability.
Local fishers enforce whale and dolphin watching regulations, and the community celebrates this status with events and a Whale Festival. Congratulations to the Golfo Dulce Whale Heritage Site Steering Committee!
